Midterm Rehab Secret 9: Your Time, Money, and Career are Linked

“It’ll be better when I’m done.”

This was my mantra during grad school. Every time I was stuck at the lab until midnight. Every time I had trouble paying the bills. Every time I watched a friend in “the real world” get promoted. I had future-itis.

Have you ever caught yourself stuck in destination thinking?

I’ve been thinking about the cliches that talk about “embracing the journey, not the destination.” They’re true, but they didn’t make much sense: what’s it mean to embrace the journey? Somehow convince myself to enjoy going through struggles? Enjoy watching everyone move forward while I lingered behind?

I think it means this: You’re going to journey, so journey well.

We are whole people.

As much as I wanted to ignore those needs until I finished school, put them on a shelf for a while, I finally realized I couldn’t. The best analogy I’ve seen is the Wheel of Life. Each spoke represents a key area. When one (or more) is underdeveloped, you have a flat tire.

For example, it turns out that being unhealthy affects your schoolwork.

Three of those spokes are Time, Money, Career.

When one is out of whack, they all are. You might not even know why you have a knot in your gut because they’re linked so deeply. But if you don’t feel progress in each you’re going to feel like you have to endure, rather than thrive.

If you can’t wait to get somewhere, you’re suffering from destination thinking. It’s because you’re not journeying well. The key to journeying well is to make progress in all areas of your life.

Midterm Rehab is a workshop that will help you do just that! This go-at-your-own-pace experience takes less than a day to help you manage your time, get control of your money, and launch your dream career so that you can finish this semester as the best you’ve ever had.
