Midterm Rehab Secret 7: You’re not Too Busy to Build Your Career and Network as a Student

The worst time to dig a well is when you realize you’re thirsty.

As a student, I hated networking. Hated it! I realize now that I had two issues:

  1. I was trying to fit their mold.
  2. I felt that I had to be manipulative.

Both were wrong.

Fitting the mold.

One of the hardest questions to answer is “what do I want to do with my life?” It’s hard to choose something like that, especially when we don’t know all of the options. Every time I met a professional, I learned a new possible career path. I’d try and convince myself that this was THE thing. Of course every time a new idea came along, I lost touch with the people from the past ones.

Manipulative? No.

I am not a manipulative person. Sometimes I avoid doing things because I am afraid of LOOKING manipulative! I just hate the idea of tricking someone into a decision that they later regret.

The worst time to dig a well is when you realize you’re thirsty.

And that’s why I was having these issues. I only networked when it was time for me to find an internship or job. For me, and many students, networking and job hunting meant the same thing!

A better way: network because relationship is a good thing.

When you make networking a part of your regular routine, you have an entirely different motive: connection. You’ll find yourself in all sorts of interesting and meaningful relationships. You’ll have a chance to test drive ideas without the pressure of fitting the mold.

But who has the time?

You. You have the time. You can build a meaningful professional network in just a few minutes. You can maintain and grow it in just a few more.

Midterm Rehab is a go-at-your-own-pace workshop to help you jumpstart this effort. In just a few hours you’ll be in control of your Time, Money, and Career so that you can finish this semester as the best you’ve ever had.
